About Your Organizer

Aario Shahbany My name is Aario Shahbany. As a software engineer I worked as an expat for more than a decade in various countries. The idea of a workshop only and only for friendship came to my mind first in Berlin Germany. While a much bigger city than Tenerife, Berlin still has its own issues regarding expats finding friends and building deep human connections. In 2019 I had found for myself a group of friends and we were gathering regularly. Once it happened that we could not meet for a period of 1 month. Everyone had his own errands and difficulties, so we just did not meet.

When we finally met again, one lady in our group burst into tears when talking how lonely she was and that the only people she could talk to, were the cashier at the super market and even the supermarket banned her from shopping there anymore! (Yes being banned by a supermarket is a thing in Germany!). That made me start researching about the phenomenon of expats loneliness. While I had my own circle of friends, the rest of the society did not have it necessarily well.

In 2019 the article of DW was titled Berlin the capital of loneliness, saying that:

“The Christian Democrats [The CDU Party] in Berlin are calling for a special commissioner for loneliness as isolation plagues the metropolis.”

Since I do not wait on governments anywhere, I started the workshop in Berlin. I was persistent and 6 years of running the group, gathered more than 14000 members. Almost all expats. English speaking. Looking to find friends. Every week around 50 or more of them were meeting. Initial chat and getting to know, my speech, then more time for networking and practice what they have learned. Thousands of circles of friends, unforgettable memories, some relationships, and of course, thousands of friends for me. It worked!

The method is simple:

  • Provide people with a regular place so they can meet frequently and build connections.
  • Step by step, describe the core ingredients of a real friendship to the attendants (Which you will learn in this workshop).
  • Encourage people to practice what they have learned every week.
  • And sprinkle love on the top.

It works everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Why is there a fee for this workshop?

    • A: We charge €50 for the full 10-session series, which works out to just €5 per week. This covers the cost of our platform and event coordination, but more importantly, it ensures everyone in the room is genuinely committed to the group. You will then spend 10 sessions with people who are as committed to friendship as you are. That makes up for opportunities of serious and long lasting friendships.
  • Q: What happens during a typical Saturday session?

    • A: We meet in front of the Auditorio de Tenerife for two hours. We start with a friendly icebreaker to get everyone comfortable, followed by a short, down-to-earth talk about the topic of the session (see the road map). Then, we spend time practicing what we’ve learned through relaxed, and honest conversations.
  • Q: Do I need a special background to join?

    • A: Not at all! While I’m a software engineer and use a bit of logic to structure our road map, this group is for everyone. Whether you are a remote worker, a retiree, or just new to Tenerife, you are very welcome here. All you need is an open heart and a desire to make real friends.
  • Q: What if I have to miss a week?

    • A: Don’t worry! While meeting frequently is the best way to build deep connections, we know life can get busy. If you miss a Saturday, you can still stay connected with the group and join the next session. Friendship doesn’t end after each session or after the workshop. We can always get in touch and meet even after the workshops.
  • Q: Is this only for expats?

    • A: We focus on expats because building a “village” from scratch in a new country is a unique challenge, but anyone who speaks English and wants to build lasting friendships is welcome to join our workshop.
  • Q: Does this method really help people make friends?

    • A: It really does. I ran a similar community in Berlin for six years that grew to over 14,000 members. The “Active Friendship” method is simply about showing up regularly and being committed in making friendships with others. By following our 10-week road map, you’ll find that moving past small talk becomes much easier and more natural.
